Cullen (surname)

Cullen is a surname of Scottish or Irish origin. Cullen is a surname of Scottish origin. Cullen (Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Cuilinn) is a village and former royal burgh in Moray, Scotland, on the North Sea coast 20 miles (32 km) east of Elgin. The village now has a population of 1,327 and is famous for Cullen Skink. In Ireland it is derived from the Mac Cuilinn, a native Gaelic Sept of County Monaghan, or from the O'Cuilinn Sept of County Kildare. The name seems to be related to Cullinane. While Cullen is encountered primarily in Dublin and southeast Ireland, Cullinan/Cullinane used almost exclusively in western Ireland on a North-South-Axis from Galway to Cork.[1] A distribution map of the name has been processed on a genealogy site.[2]
